           Shewasveryfarfromwishingtodwellonherownfeelings,ortorepresentherselfassufferingmuch,anyotherwisethanastheself-commandshehadpractisedsinceherfirstknowledgeofEdward’sengagement,mightsuggestahintofwhatwaspracticabletoMarianne.Hernarrationwasclearandsimple;andthoughitcouldnotbegivenwithoutemotion,itwasnotaccompaniedbyviolentagitation,norimpetuousgrief.—THATbelongedrathertothehearer,forMariannelistenedwithhorror,andcriedexcessively.Elinorwastobethecomforterofothersinherowndistresses,nolessthanintheirs;andallthecomfortthatcouldbegivenbyassurancesofherowncomposureofmind,andaveryearnestvindicationofEdwardfromeverychargebutofimprudence,wasreadilyoffered.
