           Whatevertheymayhavebeen,however,shemaynow,andhereafterdoubtlessWILLturnwithgratitudetowardsherowncondition,whenshecomparesitwiththatofmypoorEliza,whensheconsidersthewretchedandhopelesssituationofthispoorgirl,andpictureshertoherself,withanaffectionforhimsostrong,stillasstrongasherown,andwithamindtormentedbyself-reproach,whichmustattendherthroughlife.Surelythiscomparisonmusthaveitsusewithher.Shewillfeelherownsufferingstobenothing.Theyproceedfromnomisconduct,andcanbringnodisgrace.Onthecontrary,everyfriendmustbemadestillmoreherfriendbythem.Concernforherunhappiness,andrespectforherfortitudeunderit,muststrengtheneveryattachment.Useyourowndiscretion,however,incommunicatingtoherwhatIhavetoldyou.Youmustknowbestwhatwillbeitseffect;buthadInotseriously,andfrommyheartbelieveditmightbeofservice,mightlessenherregrets,Iwouldnothavesufferedmyselftotroubleyouwiththisaccountofmyfamilyafflictions,witharecitalwhichmayseemtohavebeenintendedtoraisemyselfattheexpenseofothers."
