           Elinor’sthoughtswerefullofwhatmightbepassinginBerkeleyStreetduringtheirabsence;butamoment’sglanceathersisterwhentheyreturnedwasenoughtoinformher,thatWilloughbyhadpaidnosecondvisitthere.Anotewasjustthenbroughtin,andlaidonthetable.

           "Forme!"criedMarianne,steppinghastilyforward.

           "No,ma’am,formymistress."

           ButMarianne,notconvinced,tookitinstantlyup.

           "ItisindeedforMrs.Jennings;howprovoking!"

           "Youareexpectingaletter,then?"saidElinor,unabletobelongersilent.

           "Yes,alittle—notmuch."

           Afterashortpause."Youhavenoconfidenceinme,Marianne."

           "Nay,Elinor,thisreproachfromYOU—youwhohaveconfidenceinnoone!"

           "Me!"returnedElinorinsomeconfusion;"indeed,Marianne,Ihavenothingtotell."

           "NorI,"answeredMariannewithenergy,"oursituationsthenarealike.Wehaveneitherofusanythingtotell;you,becauseyoudonotcommunicate,andI,becauseIconcealnothing."

           Elinor,distressedbythischargeofreserveinherself,whichshewasnotatlibertytodoaway,knewnothow,undersuchcircumstances,topressforgreateropennessinMarianne.
