EdwardFerrarswasnotrecommendedtotheirgoodopinionbyanypeculiargracesofpersonoraddress.Hewasnothandsome,andhismannersrequiredintimacytomakethempleasing.Hewastoodiffidenttodojusticetohimself;butwhenhisnaturalshynesswasovercome,hisbehaviourgaveeveryindicationofanopen,affectionateheart.Hisunderstandingwasgood,andhiseducationhadgivenitsolidimprovement.Buthewasneitherfittedbyabilitiesnordispositiontoanswerthewishesofhismotherandsister,wholongedtoseehimdistinguished—as—theyhardlyknewwhat.Theywantedhimtomakeafinefigureintheworldinsomemannerorother.Hismotherwishedtointeresthiminpoliticalconcerns,togethimintoparliament,ortoseehimconnectedwithsomeofthegreatmenoftheday.Mrs.JohnDashwoodwisheditlikewise;butinthemeanwhile,tilloneofthesesuperiorblessingscouldbeattained,itwouldhavequietedherambitiontoseehimdrivingabarouche.ButEdwardhadnoturnforgreatmenorbarouches.Allhiswishescenteredindomesticcomfortandthequietofprivatelife.Fortunatelyhehadayoungerbrotherwhowasmorepromising.
EdwardhadbeenstayingseveralweeksinthehousebeforeheengagedmuchofMrs.Dashwood’sattention;forshewas,atthattime,insuchafflictionasrenderedhercarelessofsurroundingobjects.Shesawonlythathewasquietandunobtrusive,andshelikedhimforit.Hedidnotdisturbthewretchednessofhermindbyill-timedconversation.
