Norweretheconversationsofthesegentlementheonlysoundsthatbrokeupontheear.Standingonaboxbehindawoodenbaratanotherendoftheroomwasaclerkinspectacleswhowas‘takingtheaffidavits’;largebatchesofwhichwere,fromtimetotime,carriedintotheprivateroombyanotherclerkforthejudge’ssignature.Therewerealargenumberofattorneys’clerkstobesworn,anditbeingamoralimpossibilitytoswearthemallatonce,thestrugglesofthesegentlementoreachtheclerkinspectacles,werelikethoseofacrowdtogetinatthepitdoorofatheatrewhenGraciousMajestyhonoursitwithitspresence.Anotherfunctionary,fromtimetotime,exercisedhislungsincallingoverthenamesofthosewhohadbeensworn,forthepurposeofrestoringtothemtheiraffidavitsaftertheyhadbeensignedbythejudge,whichgaverisetoafewmorescuffles;andallthesethingsgoingonatthesametime,occasionedasmuchbustleasthemostactiveandexcitablepersoncoulddesiretobehold.
