           ‘Youdon’tsayso,’saidthatgentleman,attheconclusionofthewhisper.

           ‘Ido,indeed,’repliedDoctorSlammer.

           ‘Youareboundtokickhimonthespot,’murmuredtheownerofthecamp-stool,withgreatimportance.

           ‘Dobequiet,Payne,’interposedthelieutenant.‘Willyouallowmetoaskyou,sir,’hesaid,addressingMr.Pickwick,whowasconsiderablymystifiedbythisveryunpoliteby-play—‘willyouallowmetoaskyou,Sir,whetherthatpersonbelongstoyourparty?’

           ‘No,Sir,’repliedMr.Pickwick,‘heisaguestofours.’

           ‘Heisamemberofyourclub,orIammistaken?’saidthelieutenantinquiringly.

           ‘Certainlynot,’respondedMr.Pickwick.

           ‘Andneverwearsyourclub-button?’saidthelieutenant.

           ‘Nonever!’repliedtheastonishedMr.Pickwick.
