‘Buthewasanalteredman,andhecouldnotbearthethoughtofreturningtoaplacewherehisrepentancewouldbescoffedat,andhisreformationdisbelieved.Hehesitatedforafewmoments;andthenturnedawaytowanderwherehemight,andseekhisbreadelsewhere.
‘Thelantern,thespade,andthewickerbottlewerefound,thatday,inthechurchyard.Therewereagreatmanyspeculationsaboutthesexton’sfate,atfirst,butitwasspeedilydeterminedthathehadbeencarriedawaybythegoblins;andtherewerenotwantingsomeverycrediblewitnesseswhohaddistinctlyseenhimwhiskedthroughtheaironthebackofachestnuthorseblindofoneeye,withthehind-quartersofalion,andthetailofabear.
