           Hesawthosewhohadbeendelicatelynurtured,andtenderlybroughtup,cheerfulunderprivations,andsuperiortosuffering,thatwouldhavecrushedmanyofaroughergrain,becausetheyborewithintheirownbosomsthematerialsofhappiness,contentment,andpeace.Hesawthatwomen,thetenderestandmostfragileofallGod’screatures,weretheoftenestsuperiortosorrow,adversity,anddistress;andhesawthatitwasbecausetheybore,intheirownhearts,aninexhaustiblewell-springofaffectionanddevotion.Aboveall,hesawthatmenlikehimself,whosnarledatthemirthandcheerfulnessofothers,werethefoulestweedsonthefairsurfaceoftheearth;andsettingallthegoodoftheworldagainsttheevil,hecametotheconclusionthatitwasaverydecentandrespectablesortofworldafterall.Nosoonerhadheformedit,thanthecloudwhichhadclosedoverthelastpicture,seemedtosettleonhissenses,andlullhimtorepose.Onebyone,thegoblinsfadedfromhissight;and,asthelastonedisappeared,hesanktosleep.

           ‘ThedayhadbrokenwhenGabrielGrubawoke,andfoundhimselflyingatfulllengthontheflatgravestoneinthechurchyard,withthewickerbottlelyingemptybyhisside,andhiscoat,spade,andlantern,allwellwhitenedbythelastnight’sfrost,scatteredontheground.Thestoneonwhichhehadfirstseenthegoblinseated,stoodboltuprightbeforehim,andthegraveatwhichhehadworked,thenightbefore,wasnotfaroff.
