           ‘Ishallbedelighted,myboy,’saidWardle.‘Joedamnthatboy,he’sgonetosleep.’‘No,Iain’t,sir,’repliedthefatboy,startingupfromaremotecorner,where,likethepatronsaintoffatboystheimmortalHornerhehadbeendevouringaChristmaspie,thoughnotwiththecoolnessanddeliberationwhichcharacterisedthatyounggentleman’sproceedings.

           ThefatboyfilledMr.Pickwick’sglass,andthenretiredbehindhismaster’schair,fromwhencehewatchedtheplayoftheknivesandforks,andtheprogressofthechoicemorselsfromthedishestothemouthsofthecompany,withakindofdarkandgloomyjoythatwasmostimpressive.
