Todothered-nosedmanjustice,hewouldhavebeenveryfarfromwiseifhehadentertainedanysuchintention;for,tojudgefromallappearances,hemusthavebeenpossessedofamostdesirablecircleofacquaintance,ifhecouldhavereasonablyexpectedtobemorecomfortableanywhereelse.Thefirewasblazingbrightlyundertheinfluenceofthebellows,andthekettlewassinginggailyundertheinfluenceofboth.Asmalltrayoftea-thingswasarrangedonthetable;aplateofhotbutteredtoastwasgentlysimmeringbeforethefire;andthered-nosedmanhimselfwasbusilyengagedinconvertingalargesliceofbreadintothesameagreeableedible,throughtheinstrumentalityofalongbrasstoasting-fork.
