Grummerwassworndirectly;butasGrummerwandered,andMr.Nupkins’sdinnerwasnearlyready,Mr.Nupkinscutthemattershort,byputtingleadingquestionstoGrummer,whichGrummeransweredasnearlyintheaffirmativeashecould.Sotheexaminationwentoff,allverysmoothandcomfortable,andtwoassaultswereprovedagainstMr.Weller,andathreatagainstMr.Winkle,andapushagainstMr.Snodgrass.Whenallthiswasdonetothemagistrate’ssatisfaction,themagistrateandMr.Jinksconsultedinwhispers.
Theconsultationhavinglastedabouttenminutes,Mr.Jinksretiredtohisendofthetable;andthemagistrate,withapreparatorycough,drewhimselfupinhischair,andwasproceedingtocommencehisaddress,whenMr.Pickwickinterposed.
