NowthiswatchwasaspecialfavouritewithMr.Pickwick,havingbeencarriedabout,beneaththeshadowofhiswaistcoat,foragreaternumberofyearsthanwefeelcalledupontostateatpresent.Thepossibilityofgoingtosleep,unlessitweretickinggentlybeneathhispillow,orinthewatch-pocketoverhishead,hadneverenteredMr.Pickwick’sbrain.Soasitwasprettylatenow,andhewasunwillingtoringhisbellatthathourofthenight,heslippedonhiscoat,ofwhichhehadjustdivestedhimself,andtakingthejapannedcandlestickinhishand,walkedquietlydownstairs.ThemorestairsMr.Pickwickwentdown,themorestairsthereseemedtobetodescend,andagainandagain,whenMr.Pickwickgotintosomenarrowpassage,andbegantocongratulatehimselfonhavinggainedtheground-floor,didanotherflightofstairsappearbeforehisastonishedeyes.Atlasthereachedastonehall,whichherememberedtohaveseenwhenheenteredthehouse.
