           Asuddenringatthebellwhichhungintheoffice,summonedMr.JacksontotheapartmentofFogg,fromwhencehecamebacktosaythathe(Fogg)wasreadytoseeMr.Pickwickifhewouldstepupstairs.UpstairsMr.Pickwickdidstepaccordingly,leavingSamWellerbelow.Theroomdooroftheone-pairback,boreinscribedinlegiblecharacterstheimposingwords,‘Mr.Fogg’;and,havingtappedthereat,andbeendesiredtocomein,JacksonusheredMr.Pickwickintothepresence.

           ‘IsMr.Dodsonin?’inquiredMr.Fogg.

           ‘Justcomein,Sir,’repliedJackson.

           ‘Askhimtostephere.’

           ‘Yes,sir.’ExitJackson.

           ‘Takeaseat,sir,’saidFogg;‘thereisthepaper,sir;mypartnerwillbeheredirectly,andwecanconverseaboutthismatter,sir.’

           Mr.Pickwicktookaseatandthepaper,but,insteadofreadingthelatter,peepedoverthetopofit,andtookasurveyofthemanofbusiness,whowasanelderly,pimply-faced,vegetable-dietsortofman,inablackcoat,darkmixturetrousers,andsmallblackgaiters;akindofbeingwhoseemedtobeanessentialpartofthedeskatwhichhewaswriting,andtohaveasmuchthoughtorfeeling.

           Afterafewminutes’silence,Mr.Dodson,aplump,portly,stern-lookingman,withaloudvoice,appeared;andtheconversationcommenced.

           ‘ThisisMr.Pickwick,’saidFogg.
