           Asuddenscrapingoffeet,mingledwiththesoundofsuppressedlaughter,washeardfrombehindthepartition.

           ‘They’rea-twiggin’ofyou,Sir,’whisperedMr.Weller.

           ‘Twiggingofme,Sam!’repliedMr.Pickwick;‘whatdoyoumeanbytwiggingme?’

           Mr.Wellerrepliedbypointingwithhisthumboverhisshoulder,andMr.Pickwick,onlookingup,becamesensibleofthepleasingfact,thatallthefourclerks,withcountenancesexpressiveoftheutmostamusement,andwiththeirheadsthrustoverthewoodenscreen,wereminutelyinspectingthefigureandgeneralappearanceofthesupposedtriflerwithfemalehearts,anddisturberoffemalehappiness.Onhislookingup,therowofheadssuddenlydisappeared,andthesoundofpenstravellingatafuriousrateoverpaper,immediatelysucceeded.
