Buthereadifficultyarose.Thelonggamekeeperresolutelyprotestedagainsttheintroductionintoashootingparty,ofagentlemaninabarrow,asagrossviolationofallestablishedrulesandprecedents.Itwasagreatobjection,butnotaninsurmountableone.Thegamekeeperhavingbeencoaxedandfeed,andhaving,moreover,easedhismindby‘punching’theheadoftheinventiveyouthwhohadfirstsuggestedtheuseofthemachine,Mr.Pickwickwasplacedinit,andoffthepartyset;Wardleandthelonggamekeeperleadingtheway,andMr.Pickwickinthebarrow,propelledbySam,bringinguptherear.
‘Stop,Sam,’saidMr.Pickwick,whentheyhadgothalfacrossthefirstfield.
‘What’sthematternow?’saidWardle.
‘Iwon’tsufferthisbarrowtobemovedanotherstep,’saidMr.Pickwick,resolutely,‘unlessWinklecarriesthatgunofhisinadifferentmanner.’
‘HowAMItocarryit?’saidthewretchedWinkle.‘Carryitwiththemuzzletotheground,’repliedMr.Pickwick.
‘It’ssounsportsmanlike,’reasonedWinkle.
‘Idon’tcarewhetherit’sunsportsmanlikeornot,’repliedMr.Pickwick;‘Iamnotgoingtobeshotinawheel-barrow,forthesakeofappearances,topleaseanybody.’
‘Iknowthegentleman’llputthat‘erechargeintosomebodyaforehe’sdone,’growledthelongman.
