           Andhowmuchmoreinterestingdidthespectaclebecome,when,startingintofulllifeandanimation,asasimultaneouscallfor‘Pickwick’burstfromhisfollowers,thatillustriousmanslowlymountedintotheWindsorchair,onwhichhehadbeenpreviouslyseated,andaddressedtheclubhimselfhadfounded.Whatastudyforanartistdidthatexcitingscenepresent!TheeloquentPickwick,withonehandgracefullyconcealedbehindhiscoattails,andtheotherwavinginairtoassisthisglowingdeclamation;hiselevatedpositionrevealingthosetightsandgaiters,which,hadtheyclothedanordinaryman,mighthavepassedwithoutobservation,butwhich,whenPickwickclothedthemifwemayusetheexpressioninspiredinvoluntaryaweandrespect;surroundedbythemenwhohadvolunteeredtosharetheperilsofhistravels,andwhoweredestinedtoparticipateinthegloriesofhisdiscoveries.OnhisrightsatMr.TracyTupmanthetoosusceptibleTupman,whotothewisdomandexperienceofmatureryearssuperaddedtheenthusiasmandardourofaboyinthemostinterestingandpardonableofhumanweaknesseslove.Timeandfeedinghadexpandedthatonceromanticform;theblacksilkwaistcoathadbecomemoreandmoredeveloped;inchbyinchhadthegoldwatch-chainbeneathitdisappearedfromwithintherangeofTupman’svision;andgraduallyhadthecapaciouschinencroacheduponthebordersofthewhitecravat:butthesoulofTupmanhadknownnochangeadmirationofthefairsexwasstillitsrulingpassion.
