           ‘Awrittenapology!’repeatedMr.Winkle,inthemostemphatictoneofamazementpossible.

           ‘Ofcourseyouknowthealternative,’repliedthevisitorcoolly.

           ‘Wereyouintrustedwiththismessagetomebyname?’inquiredMr.Winkle,whoseintellectswerehopelesslyconfusedbythisextraordinaryconversation.
