‘TomSmart,gentlemen,hadalwaysbeenverymuchattachedtothepublicline.Ithadbeenlonghisambitiontostandinabarofhisown,inagreencoat,knee-cords,andtops.Hehadagreatnotionoftakingthechairatconvivialdinners,andhehadoftenthoughthowwellhecouldpresideinaroomofhisowninthetalkingway,andwhatacapitalexamplehecouldsettohiscustomersinthedrinkingdepartment.AllthesethingspassedrapidlythroughTom’smindashesatdrinkingthehotpunchbytheroaringfire,andhefeltveryjustlyandproperlyindignantthatthetallmanshouldbeinafairwayofkeepingsuchanexcellenthouse,whilehe,TomSmart,wasasfarofffromitasever.So,afterdeliberatingoverthetwolasttumblers,whetherhehadn’taperfectrighttopickaquarrelwiththetallmanforhavingcontrivedtogetintothegoodgracesofthebuxomwidow,TomSmartatlastarrivedatthesatisfactoryconclusionthathewasaveryill-usedandpersecutedindividual,andhadbettergotobed.
