           ‘Notworthwhilesplittingaguinea,’saidthestranger,‘tosswhoshallpayforbothIcall;youspinfirsttimewomanwomanbewitchingwoman,’anddowncamethesovereignwiththedragon(calledbycourtesyawoman)uppermost.

           Mr.Tupmanrangthebell,purchasedthetickets,andorderedchambercandlesticks.InanotherquarterofanhourthestrangerwascompletelyarrayedinafullsuitofMr.NathanielWinkle’s.

           ‘It’sanewcoat,’saidMr.Tupman,asthestrangersurveyedhimselfwithgreatcomplacencyinachevalglass;‘thefirstthat’sbeenmadewithourclubbutton,’andhecalledhiscompanions’attentiontothelargegiltbuttonwhichdisplayedabustofMr.Pickwickinthecentre,andtheletters‘P.C.’oneitherside.

           ‘"P.C."’saidthestranger—‘queersetoutoldfellow’slikeness,and"P.C."—Whatdoes"P.C."standforPeculiarCoat,eh?’
