           StillMr.Winklesaidnothing.

           ‘Areyouashamedofyourself,Sir,orareyounot?’inquiredtheoldgentleman.

           ‘No,Sir,’repliedMr.Winkle,drawingArabella’sarmthroughhis.‘Iamnotashamedofmyself,orofmywifeeither.’

           ‘Uponmyword!’criedtheoldgentlemanironically.

           ‘Iamverysorrytohavedoneanythingwhichhaslessenedyouraffectionforme,Sir,’saidMr.Winkle;‘butIwillsay,atthesametime,thatIhavenoreasontobeashamedofhavingthisladyformywife,noryouofhavingherforadaughter.’

           ‘Givemeyourhand,Nat,’saidtheoldgentleman,inanalteredvoice.‘Kissme,mylove.Youareaverycharminglittledaughter-in-lawafterall!’

           Inafewminutes’timeMr.WinklewentinsearchofMr.Pickwick,andreturningwiththatgentleman,presentedhimtohisfather,whereupontheyshookhandsforfiveminutesincessantly.

           ‘Mr.Pickwick,Ithankyoumostheartilyforallyourkindnesstomyson,’saidoldMr.Winkle,inabluff,straightforwardway.‘Iamahastyfellow,andwhenIsawyoulast,Iwasvexedandtakenbysurprise.Ihavejudgedformyselfnow,andammorethansatisfied.ShallImakeanymoreapologies,Mr.Pickwick?’
