Chargedwiththismessage,thefatboyreturned,slumberingaspeaceablyinhisdickey,overthestones,asifithadbeenadownbedonwatchsprings.Bysomeextraordinarymiracleheawokeofhisownaccord,whenthecoachstopped,andgivinghimselfagoodshaketostiruphisfaculties,wentupstairstoexecutehiscommission.
Now,whethertheshakehadjumbledthefatboy’sfacultiestogether,insteadofarrangingtheminproperorder,orhadrousedsuchaquantityofnewideaswithinhimastorenderhimobliviousofordinaryformsandceremonies,or(whichisalsopossible)hadprovedunsuccessfulinpreventinghisfallingasleepasheascendedthestairs,itisanundoubtedfactthathewalkedintothesitting-roomwithoutpreviouslyknockingatthedoor;andsobeheldagentlemanwithhisarmsclaspinghisyoungmistress’swaist,sittingverylovinglybyhersideonasofa,whileArabellaandherprettyhandmaidfeignedtobeabsorbedinlookingoutofawindowattheotherendoftheroom.
