           ‘Gentlemen,’criedMr.Pickwick,asPottstartedupandseizedthefire-shovel—‘gentlemen!Consider,forHeaven’ssakehelpSamherepray,gentlemeninterfere,somebody.’

           Utteringtheseincoherentexclamations,Mr.Pickwickrushedbetweentheinfuriatedcombatantsjustintimetoreceivethecarpet-bagononesideofhisbody,andthefire-shovelontheother.WhethertherepresentativesofthepublicfeelingofEatanswillwereblindedbyanimosity,or(beingbothacutereasoners)sawtheadvantageofhavingathirdpartybetweenthemtobearalltheblows,certainitisthattheypaidnottheslightestattentiontoMr.Pickwick,butdefyingeachotherwithgreatspirit,pliedthecarpet-bagandthefire-shovelmostfearlessly.Mr.Pickwickwouldunquestionablyhavesufferedseverelyforhishumaneinterference,ifMr.
