           Hehadhardlycomposedhimselfintotheneedfulstateofabstraction,whenhethoughtheheardhisownnameproclaimedinsomedistantpassage.Norwashemistaken,foritquicklypassedfrommouthtomouth,andinafewsecondstheairteemedwithshoutsof‘Weller!’‘Here!’roaredSam,inastentorianvoice.‘Wot’sthematter?Whowantshim?Hasanexpresscometosaythathiscountryhouseisafire?’

           ‘Somebodywantsyouinthehall,’saidamanwhowasstandingby.

           ‘Justmindthat‘erepaperandthepot,oldfeller,willyou?’saidSam.‘I’ma-comin’.Blessed,iftheywasa-callin’metothebar,theycouldn’tmakemorenoiseaboutit!’

           Accompanyingthesewordswithagentlerapontheheadoftheyounggentlemanbeforenoticed,who,unconsciousofhisclosevicinitytothepersoninrequest,wasscreaming‘Weller!’withallhismight,Samhastenedacrosstheground,andranupthestepsintothehall.
