‘But,’continuedthecobbler,‘findingthattheycouldn’tagreeamongthemselves,andconsequentlycouldn’tgetupacaseagainstthewill,theywithdrewthecaveat,andIpaidallthelegacies.I’dhardlydoneit,whenonenevybringsanactiontosetthewillaside.Thecasecomeson,somemonthsafterwards,aforeadeafoldgentleman,inabackroomsomewheredownbyPaul’sChurchyard;andarterfourcounselshadtakenadaya-piecetobotherhimregularly,hetakesaweekortwotoconsider,andreadtheevidenceinsixvolumes,andthengiveshisjudgmentthathowthetestatorwasnotquiterightinhishead,andImustpayallthemoneybackagain,andallthecosts.Iappealed;thecasecomeonbeforethreeorfourverysleepygentlemen,whohadhearditallbeforeintheothercourt,wherethey’relawyerswithoutwork;theonlydifferencebeing,that,there,they’recalleddoctors,andintheotherplacedelegates,ifyouunderstandthat;andtheyverydutifullyconfirmedthedecisionoftheoldgentlemanbelow.Afterthat,wewentintoChancery,wherewearestill,andwhereIshallalwaysbe.Mylawyershavehadallmythousandpoundlongago;andwhatbetweentheestate,astheycallit,andthecosts,I’mherefortenthousand,andshallstophere,tillIdie,mendingshoes.SomegentlemenhavetalkedofbringingitbeforeParliament,andIdaresaywouldhavedoneit,onlytheyhadn’ttimetocometome,andIhadn’tpowertogotothem,andtheygottiredofmylongletters,anddroppedthebusiness.
