           Whentheycamedowntothecornerandturned,shewassaying,‘IfIpinchmyselfforit,sir,thatismybusiness.Confineyourselftoyours,andaskmenoquestion.’

           ‘ByHeaven,ma’am!’hereplied,makingheranotherbow.‘Itwasmyprofoundrespectforthestrengthofyourcharacter,andmyadmirationofyourbeauty.’

           ‘Iwantneithertheonenortheotherfromanyone,’saidshe,‘andcertainlynotfromyouofallcreatures.Goonwithyourreport.’

           ‘AmIpardoned?’heasked,withanairofhalfabashedgallantry.

           ‘Youarepaid,’shesaid,‘andthatisallyouwant.’

           Whetherthegirlhungbehindbecauseshewasnottohearthebusiness,orasalreadyknowingenoughaboutit,Clennamcouldnotdetermine.Theyturnedandsheturned.
