Nay,thehighpriestsofthisworshiphadthemanbeforethemasaprotestagainsttheirmeanness.Themultitudeworshippedontrust—thoughalwaysdistinctlyknowingwhy—buttheofficiatorsatthealtarhadthemanhabituallyintheirview.Theysatathisfeasts,andhesatattheirs.Therewasaspectrealwaysattendantonhim,sayingtothesehighpriests,‘Aresuchthesignsyoutrust,andlovetohonour;thishead,theseeyes,thismodeofspeech,thetoneandmannerofthisman?YouaretheleversoftheCircumlocutionOffice,andtherulersofmen.
