           Resigningherselftoinevitablefatebymakingthebestofthosepeople,theMiggleses,andsubmittingherphilosophytothedraughtuponit,ofwhichshehadforeseenthelikelihoodinherinterviewwithArthur,MrsGowanhandsomelyresolvednottoopposeherson’smarriage.Inherprogressto,andhappyarrivalat,thisresolution,shewaspossiblyinfluenced,notonlybyhermaternalaffectionsbutbythreepoliticconsiderations.

           Ofthese,thefirstmayhavebeenthathersonhadneversignifiedthesmallestintentiontoaskherconsent,oranymistrustofhisabilitytodispensewithit;thesecond,thatthepensionbestoweduponherbyagratefulcountry(andaBarnacle)wouldbefreedfromanylittlefilialinroads,whenherHenryshouldbemarriedtothedarlingonlychildofamaninveryeasycircumstances;thethird,thatHenry’sdebtsmustclearlybepaiddownuponthealtar-railingbyhisfather-in-law.When,tothesethree-foldpointsofprudencethereisaddedthefactthatMrsGowanyieldedherconsentthemomentsheknewofMrMeagleshavingyieldedhis,andthatMrMeagles’sobjectiontothemarriagehadbeenthesoleobstacleinitswayallalong,itbecomestheheightofprobabilitythattherelictofthedeceasedCommissionerofnothingparticular,turnedtheseideasinhersagaciousmind.
