           ThebabywhosefirstdraughtofairhadbeentincturedwithDoctorHaggage’sbrandy,washandeddownamongthegenerationsofcollegians,likethetraditionoftheircommonparent.Intheearlierstagesofherexistence,shewashandeddowninaliteralandprosaicsense;itbeingalmostapartoftheentrancefootingofeverynewcollegiantonursethechildwhohadbeenborninthecollege.

           ‘Byrights,’remarkedtheturnkeywhenshewasfirstshowntohim,‘Ioughttobehergodfather.’

           Thedebtorirresolutelythoughtofitforaminute,andsaid,‘Perhapsyouwouldn’tobjecttoreallybeinghergodfather?’

           ‘Oh!Idon’tobject,’repliedtheturnkey,‘ifyoudon’t.’

           ThusitcametopassthatshewaschristenedoneSundayafternoon,whentheturnkey,beingrelieved,wasoffthelock;andthattheturnkeywentuptothefontofSaintGeorge’sChurch,andpromisedandvowedandrenouncedonherbehalf,ashehimselfrelatedwhenhecameback,‘likeagood‘un.’

           Thisinvestedtheturnkeywithanewproprietaryshareinthechild,overandabovehisformerofficialone.Whenshebegantowalkandtalk,hebecamefondofher;boughtalittlearm-chairandstooditbythehighfenderofthelodgefire-place;likedtohavehercompanywhenhewasonthelock;andusedtobribeherwithcheaptoystocomeandtalktohim.Thechild,forherpart,soongrewsofondoftheturnkeythatshewouldcomeclimbingupthelodge-stepsofherownaccordatallhoursoftheday.
