Thatitisatleastasdifficulttostayamoralinfectionasaphysicalone;thatsuchadiseasewillspreadwiththemalignityandrapidityofthePlague;thatthecontagion,whenithasoncemadehead,willsparenopursuitorcondition,butwilllayholdonpeopleinthesoundesthealth,andbecomedevelopedinthemostunlikelyconstitutions:isafactasfirmlyestablishedbyexperienceasthatwehumancreaturesbreatheanatmosphere.Ablessingbeyondappreciationwouldbeconferreduponmankind,ifthetainted,inwhoseweaknessorwickednessthesevirulentdisordersarebred,couldbeinstantlyseizedandplacedincloseconfinement(nottosaysummarilysmothered)beforethepoisoniscommunicable.
Asavastfirewillfilltheairtoagreatdistancewithitsroar,sothesacredflamewhichthemightyBarnacleshadfannedcausedtheairtoresoundmoreandmorewiththenameofMerdle.Itwasdepositedoneverylip,andcarriedintoeveryear.Thereneverwas,thereneverhadbeen,thereneveragainshouldbe,suchamanasMrMerdle.Nobody,asaforesaid,knewwhathehaddone;buteverybodyknewhimtobethegreatestthathadappeared.
