Thetimehehadreservedinhismindarriving,hesentMrTinkler,hisvalet,toMrsGeneral’sapartment(whichwouldhaveabsorbedaboutathirdoftheareaoftheMarshalsea),topresenthiscomplimentstothatlady,andrepresenthimasdesiringthefavourofaninterview.Itbeingthatperiodoftheforenoonwhenthevariousmembersofthefamilyhadcoffeeintheirownchambers,somecoupleofhoursbeforeassemblingatbreakfastinafadedhallwhichhadoncebeensumptuous,butwasnowthepreyofwateryvapoursandasettledmelancholy,MrsGeneralwasaccessibletothevalet.Thatenvoyfoundheronalittlesquareofcarpet,soextremelydiminutiveinreferencetothesizeofherstoneandmarblefloorthatshelookedasifshemighthavehaditspreadforthetryingonofaready-madepairofshoes;orasifshehadcomeintopossessionoftheenchantedpieceofcarpet,boughtforfortypursesbyoneofthethreeprincesintheArabianNights,andhadthatmomentbeentransportedonit,atawish,intoapalatialsaloonwithwhichithadnoconnection.
MrsGeneral,replyingtotheenvoy,asshesetdownheremptycoffee-cup,thatshewaswillingatoncetoproceedtoMrDorrit’sapartment,andsparehimthetroubleofcomingtoher(which,inhisgallantry,hehadproposed),theenvoythrewopenthedoor,andescortedMrsGeneraltothepresence.
