LittleDorrithadnotattainedhertwenty-secondbirthdaywithoutfindingalover.EvenintheshallowMarshalsea,theeveryoungArchershotoffafewfeatherlessarrowsnowandthenfromamouldybow,andwingedaCollegianortwo.
LittleDorrit’slover,however,wasnotaCollegian.Hewasthesentimentalsonofaturnkey.Hisfatherhoped,inthefulnessoftime,toleavehimtheinheritanceofanunstainedkey;andhadfromhisearlyyouthfamiliarisedhimwiththedutiesofhisoffice,andwithanambitiontoretaintheprison-lockinthefamily.Whilethesuccessionwasyetinabeyance,heassistedhismotherintheconductofasnugtobaccobusinessroundthecornerofHorsemongerLane(hisfatherbeinganon-residentturnkey),whichcouldusuallycommandaneatconnectionwithintheCollegewalls.
Yearsagone,whentheobjectofhisaffectionswaswonttositinherlittlearm-chairbythehighLodge-fender,YoungJohn(familyname,Chivery),ayearolderthanherself,hadeyedherwithadmiringwonder.Whenhehadplayedwithherintheyard,hisfavouritegamehadbeentocounterfeitlockingherupincorners,andtocounterfeitlettingheroutforrealkisses.Whenhegrewtallenoughtopeepthroughthekeyholeofthegreatlockofthemaindoor,hehaddiverstimessetdownhisfather’sdinner,orsupper,togetonasitmightontheoutersidethereof,whilehestoodtakingcoldinoneeyebydintofpeepingatherthroughthatairyperspective.
