TheopinionofthecommunityoutsidetheprisongatesborehardonClennamastimewenton,andhemadenofriendsamongthecommunitywithin.Toodepressedtoassociatewiththeherdintheyard,whogottogethertoforgettheircares;tooretiringandtoounhappytojoininthepoorsocialitiesofthetavern;hekepthisownroom,andwasheldindistrust.Somesaidhewasproud;someobjectedthathewassullenandreserved;somewerecontemptuousofhim,forthathewasapoor-spiriteddogwhopinedunderhisdebts.Thewholepopulationwereshyofhimonthesevariouscountsofindictment,butespeciallythelast,whichinvolvedaspeciesofdomestictreason;andhesoonbecamesoconfirmedinhisseclusion,thathisonlytimeforwalkingupanddownwaswhentheeveningClubwereassembledattheirsongsandtoastsandsentiments,andwhentheyardwasnearlylefttothewomenandchildren.
Imprisonmentbegantotelluponhim.Heknewthatheidledandmoped.Afterwhathehadknownoftheinfluencesofimprisonmentwithinthefoursmallwallsoftheveryroomheoccupied,thisconsciousnessmadehimafraidofhimself.Shrinkingfromtheobservationofothermen,andshrinkingfromhisown,hebegantochangeverysensibly.Anybodymightseethattheshadowofthewallwasdarkuponhim.
Onedaywhenhemighthavebeensometenortwelveweeksinjail,andwhenhehadbeentryingtoreadandhadnotbeenabletoreleaseeventheimaginarypeopleofthebookfromtheMarshalsea,afootstepstoppedathisdoor,andahandtappedatit.
