           Lookingbackuponhisownpoorstory,shewasitsvanishing-point.Everythinginitsperspectiveledtoherinnocentfigure.Hehadtravelledthousandsofmilestowardsit;previousunquiethopesanddoubtshadworkedthemselvesoutbeforeit;itwasthecentreoftheinterestofhislife;itwastheterminationofeverythingthatwasgoodandpleasantinit;beyond,therewasnothingbutmerewasteanddarkenedsky.

           Asillateaseasonthefirstnightofhislyingdowntosleepwithinthosedrearywalls,heworethenightoutwithsuchthoughts.WhattimeYoungJohnlaywraptinpeacefulslumber,aftercomposingandarrangingthefollowingmonumentalinscriptiononhispillow—
