‘MrsFinching.’
Theservantwaitedinspeechlessdeference.
‘Man,man,’saidMrDorrit,turninguponhimwithgrievousindignation,‘explainyourmotiveinbringingmethisridiculousname.Iamwhollyunacquaintedwithit.Finching,sir?’saidMrDorrit,perhapsavenginghimselfontheChiefButlerbySubstitute.‘Ha!WhatdoyoumeanbyFinching?’
Theman,man,seemedtomeanFlinchingasmuchasanythingelse,forhebackedawayfromMrDorrit’ssevereregard,ashereplied,‘Alady,sir.’
‘Iknownosuchlady,sir,’saidMrDorrit.‘Takethiscardaway.IknownoFinchingofeithersex.’
‘Askyourpardon,sir.Theladysaidshewasawareshemightbeunknownbyname.Butshebeggedmetosay,sir,thatshehadformerlythehonourofbeingacquaintedwithMissDorrit.Theladysaid,sir,theyoungestMissDorrit.’
MrDorritknittedhisbrowsandrejoined,afteramomentortwo,‘InformMrsFinching,sir,’emphasisingthenameasiftheinnocentmanweresolelyresponsibleforit,‘thatshecancomeup.’
