           Shestoppedintheroadway,asiftoputanendtotheconference.Heofcoursestoppedtoo.Andthegirlstopped.

           ‘It’salittleinconvenient,’saidtheman.‘Alittle.But,HolyBlue!that’snothinginsuchaservice.Iamwithoutmoneyto-night,bychance.Ihaveagoodbankerinthiscity,butIwouldnotwishtodrawuponthehouseuntilthetimewhenIshalldrawforaroundsum.’

           ‘Harriet,’saidMissWade,‘arrangewithhim—thisgentlemanhere—forsendinghimsomemoneyto-morrow.’Shesaiditwithaslurofthewordgentlemanwhichwasmorecontemptuousthananyemphasis,andwalkedslowlyon.

           Themanbenthisheadagain,andthegirlspoketohimastheybothfollowedher.Clennamventuredtolookatthegirlastheymovedaway.Hecouldnotethatherrichblackeyeswerefasteneduponthemanwithascrutinisingexpression,andthatshekeptatalittledistancefromhim,astheywalkedsidebysidetothefurtherendoftheterrace.
