           Themanysoundsbecomesodeadenedthatthechangeislikeputtingcottonintheears,orhavingtheheadthicklymuffled.Atthattimethecontrastwasfargreater;therebeingnosmallsteam-boatsontheriver,nolandingplacesbutslipperywoodenstairsandfoot-causeways,norailroadontheoppositebank,nohangingbridgeorfish-marketnearathand,notrafficonthenearestbridgeofstone,nothingmovingonthestreambutwatermen’swherriesandcoal-lighters.Longandbroadblacktiersofthelatter,mooredfastinthemudasiftheywerenevertomoveagain,madetheshorefunerealandsilentafterdark;andkeptwhatlittlewater-movementtherewas,farouttowardsmid-stream.Atanyhourlaterthansunset,andnotleastatthathourwhenmostofthepeoplewhohaveanythingtoeatathomearegoinghometoeatit,andwhenmostofthosewhohavenothinghavehardlyyetslunkouttobegorsteal,itwasadesertedplaceandlookedonadesertedscene.

           Whenheroundedthedarkcorner,theywerewalkingalongtheterracetowardsafigurewhichwascomingtowardsthem.
