           ThenGowanassertinghisrightsasadisappointedmanwhohadhisgrudgeagainstthefamily,andwho,perhaps,hadallowedhismothertohavethemthere,asmuchinthehopeitmightgivethemsomeannoyanceaswithanyotherbenevolentobject,airedhispencilandhispovertyostentatiouslybeforethem,andtoldthemhehopedintimetosettleacrustofbreadandcheeseonhiswife,andthathebeggedsuchofthemas(morefortunatethanhimself)cameinforanygoodthing,andcouldbuyapicture,topleasetorememberthepoorpainter.ThenLordDecimus,whowasawonderonhisownParliamentarypedestal,turnedouttobethewindiestcreaturehere:proposinghappinesstothebrideandbridegroominaseriesofplatitudesthatwouldhavemadethehairofanysincerediscipleandbelieverstandonend;andtrotting,withthecomplacencyofanidioticelephant,amonghowlinglabyrinthsofsentenceswhichheseemedtotakeforhighroads,andneversomuchaswantedtogetoutof.
