           Harassedbythesethoughts,henowbegantowishthemarriageover,Gowanandhisyoungwifegone,andhimselflefttofulfilhispromise,anddischargethegenerousfunctionhehadaccepted.Thislastweekwas,intruth,anuneasyintervalforthewholehouse.BeforePet,orbeforeGowan,MrMeagleswasradiant;butClennamhadmorethanoncefoundhimalone,withhisviewofthescalesandscoopmuchblurred,andhadoftenseenhimlookafterthelovers,inthegardenorelsewherewhenhewasnotseenbythem,withtheoldcloudedfaceonwhichGowanhadfallenlikeashadow.
