           ‘Andthen,mydear,’saidMrsGowannotquitesosweetlyasbefore,‘Ishouldbegladtohearwhatyouhavetosaytoit.’

           Heretheparrot,whohadbeenstandingononelegsincehescreamedlast,burstintoafitoflaughter,bobbedhimselfderisivelyupanddownonbothlegs,andfinishedbystandingononelegagain,andpausingforareply,withhisheadasmuchawryashecouldpossiblytwistit.

           ‘Soundsmercenarytoaskwhatthegentlemanistogetwiththelady,’saidMrsMerdle;‘butSocietyisperhapsalittlemercenary,youknow,mydear.’

           ‘FromwhatIcanmakeout,’saidMrsGowan,‘IbelieveImaysaythatHenrywillberelievedfromdebt—’

           ‘Muchindebt?’askedMrsMerdlethroughhereyeglass.
