           HeturnedslowlydownAldersgateStreet,andwasponderinghiswayalongtowardsSaintPaul’s,purposingtocomeintooneofthegreatthoroughfaresforthesakeoftheirlightandlife,whenacrowdofpeopleflockedtowardshimonthesamepavement,andhestoodasideagainstashoptoletthempass.Astheycameup,hemadeoutthattheyweregatheredaroundasomethingthatwascarriedonmen’sshoulders.Hesoonsawthatitwasalitter,hastilymadeofashutterorsomesuchthing;andarecumbentfigureuponit,andthescrapsofconversationinthecrowd,andamuddybundlecarriedbyoneman,andamuddyhatcarriedbyanother,informedhimthatanaccidenthadoccurred.Thelitterstoppedunderalampbeforeithadpassedhimhalf-a-dozenpaces,forsomereadjustmentoftheburden;and,thecrowdstoppingtoo,hefoundhimselfinthemidstofthearray.

           ‘AnaccidentgoingtotheHospital?’heaskedanoldmanbesidehim,whostoodshakinghishead,invitingconversation.

           ‘Yes,’saidtheman,‘alongofthemMails.Theyoughttobeprosecutedandfined,themMails.TheycomearacingoutofLadLaneandWoodStreetattwelveorfourteenmileahour,themMailsdo.Theonlywonderis,thatpeopleain’tkilledoftenerbythemMails.’

           ‘Thispersonisnotkilled,Ihope?’
