           ‘NotthatIeverheardof.’

           ‘Iknowyou’renot.Iaskedyourmother,sir.Shehastoomuchcharactertoletachanceescapeher.’

           ‘SupposingIhadbeenoftheClennamsofCornwall?’

           ‘You’dhaveheardofsomethingtoyouradvantage.’

           ‘Indeed!Ihaveheardoflittleenoughtomyadvantageforsometime.’

           ‘There’saCornishpropertygoingabegging,sir,andnotaCornishClennamtohaveitfortheasking,’saidPancks,takinghisnote-bookfromhisbreastpocketandputtingitinagain.‘Iturnoffhere.Iwishyougoodnight.’

           ‘Goodnight!’saidClennam.ButtheTug,suddenlylightened,anduntrammelledbyhavinganyweightintow,wasalreadypuffingawayintothedistance.

           TheyhadcrossedSmithfieldtogether,andClennamwasleftaloneatthecornerofBarbican.Hehadnointentionofpresentinghimselfinhismother’sdismalroomthatnight,andcouldnothavefeltmoredepressedandcastawayifhehadbeeninawilderness.
