Itwassuchanunexpectedhearing,anditwasalsosuchanunexpectedsighttoseeMrMeaglesbursttheswingdoorsopen,andemergeintothestreetwiththeshortman,whowasofanunoffendingappearance,thatClennamstoodstillforthemomentexchanginglooksofsurprisewiththeporter.Hefollowed,however,quickly;andsawMrMeaglesgoingdownthestreetwithhisenemyathisside.Hesooncameupwithhisoldtravellingcompanion,andtouchedhimontheback.ThecholericfacewhichMrMeaglesturneduponhimsmoothedwhenhesawwhoitwas,andheputouthisfriendlyhand.
‘Howareyou?’saidMrMeagles.‘Howd’yedo?Ihaveonlyjustcomeoverfromabroad.Iamgladtoseeyou.’
‘AndIamrejoicedtoseeyou.’
