           ‘Youhavebeenruffled,MrMeagles.Whatisthematter?’

           ‘Waitabit,andI’lltellyou.HaveyouleisureforaturninthePark?’

           ‘Asmuchasyouplease.’

           ‘Comealongthen.Ah!youmaywelllookathim.’HehappenedtohaveturnedhiseyestowardstheoffenderwhomMrMeagleshadsoangrilycollared.‘He’ssomethingtolookat,thatfellowis.’

           Hewasnotmuchtolookat,eitherinpointofsizeorinpointofdress;beingmerelyashort,square,practicallookingman,whosehairhadturnedgrey,andinwhosefaceandforeheadthereweredeeplinesofcogitation,whichlookedasthoughtheywerecarvedinhardwood.Hewasdressedindecentblack,alittlerusty,andhadtheappearanceofasagaciousmasterinsomehandicraft.Hehadaspectacle-caseinhishand,whichheturnedoverandoverwhilehewasthusinquestion,withacertainfreeuseofthethumbthatisneverseenbutinahandaccustomedtotools.
