           MrSparklerapologisedforthecircumstance,pleadedthathecouldn’thelpit,andsaidthat‘ourfellows,’withoutmoreparticularlyindicatingwhosefellows,usedtocallhimbythenameofQuinbusFlestrin,Junior,ortheYoungManMountain.

           ‘Yououghttohavetoldmesobefore,’Fannycomplained.

           ‘Mydear,’returnedMrSparkler,rathergratified,‘Ididn’tknowItwouldinterestyou,orIwouldhavemadeapointoftellingyou.’

           ‘Mydear,’answeredMrSparkler;‘beingasyouarewellknowntobe,aremarkablyfinewomanwithno—’

           ‘Oh,goodGRACIOUS!’criedFanny.

           MrSparklerwassodiscomposedbytheenergyofthisexclamation,accompaniedwithaflouncingupfromthesofaandaflouncingdownagain,thataminuteortwoelapsedbeforehefelthimselfequaltosayinginexplanation:

           ‘Imean,mydear,thateverybodyknowsyouarecalculatedtoshineinsociety.
