ThesituationwhichconfrontedAileenwasreallyatryingone.Agirloflessinnatecourageanddeterminationwouldhaveweakenedandyielded.Forinspiteofhervarioussocialconnectionsandacquaintances,thepeopletowhomAileencouldruninanemergencyofthepresentkindwerenotnumerous.Shecouldscarcelythinkofanyonewhowouldbelikelytotakeherinforanylengthyperiod,withoutquestion.Therewereanumberofyoungwomenofherownage,marriedandunmarried,whowereveryfriendlytoher,buttherewerefewwithwhomshewasreallyintimate.Theonlypersonwhostoodoutinhermind,ashavinganyrealpossibilityofrefugeforaperiod,wasacertainMaryCalligan,betterknownas"Mamie"amongherfriends,whohadattendedschoolwithAileeninformeryearsandwasnowateacherinoneofthelocalschools.
TheCalliganfamilyconsistedofMrs.KatharineCalligan,themother,adressmakerbyprofessionandawidow—herhusband,ahouse-moverbytrade,havingbeenkilledbyafallingwallsometenyearsbefore—andMamie,hertwenty-three-year-olddaughter.Theylivedinasmalltwo-storybrickhouseinCherryStreet,nearFifteenth.Mrs.Calliganwasnotaverygooddressmaker,notgoodenough,atleast,fortheButlerfamilytopatronizeintheirpresentexaltedstate.Aileenwentthereoccasionallyforginghamhouse-dresses,underwear,prettydressing-gowns,andalterationsonsomeofhermoreimportantclothingwhichwasmadebyaverysuperiormodisteinChestnutStreet.
