           Althoughitwasnearlyeleveno’clockwhenhearrivedattheCalligans’,Aileenwasnotyetinbed.InherbedroomupstairsshewasconfidingtoMamieandMrs.Calligansomeofhersocialexperienceswhenthebellrang,andMrs.CalliganwentdownandopenedthedoortoCowperwood.

           "MissButlerishere,Ibelieve,"hesaid."Willyoutellherthatthereissomeoneherefromherfather?"AlthoughAileenhadinstructedthatherpresenceherewasnottobedivulgedeventothemembersofherfamilytheforceofCowperwood’spresenceandthementionofButler’snamecostMrs.Calliganherpresenceofmind."Waitamoment,"shesaid;"I’llsee."

           Shesteppedback,andCowperwoodpromptlysteppedin,takingoffhishatwiththeairofonewhowassatisfiedthatAileenwasthere."SaytoherthatIonlywanttospeaktoherforafewmoments,"hecalled,asMrs.Calliganwentup-stairs,raisinghisvoiceinthehopethatAileenmighthear.Shedid,andcamedownpromptly.Shewasverymuchastonishedtothinkthatheshouldcomesosoon,andfancied,inhervanity,thattheremustbegreatexcitementinherhome.Shewouldhavegreatlygrievediftherehadnotbeen.

           TheCalliganswouldhavebeenpleasedtohear,butCowperwoodwascautious.Asshecamedownthestairsheputhisfingertohislipsinsignforsilence,andsaid,"ThisisMissButler,Ibelieve."

           "Yes,"repliedAileen,withasecretsmile.Heronedesirewastokisshim."What’sthetroubledarling?"sheasked,softly.
