           ThefollowingOctober,havingpassedhiseighteenthyearbynearlysixmonths,andfeelingsurethathewouldneverwantanythingtodowiththegrainandcommissionbusinessasconductedbytheWatermanCompany,CowperwooddecidedtoseverhisrelationswiththemandentertheemployofTighe&Company,bankersandbrokers.

           Cowperwood’smeetingwithTighe&CompanyhadcomeaboutintheordinarypursuanceofhisdutiesasoutsidemanforWaterman&Company.FromthefirstMr.Tighetookakeeninterestinthissubtleyoungemissary.

           "How’sbusinesswithyoupeople?"hewouldask,genially;or,"Findthatyou’regettingmanyI.O.U.‘sthesedays?"

           Becauseoftheunsettledconditionofthecountry,theover-inflationofsecurities,theslaveryagitation,andsoforth,therewereprospectsofhardtimes.AndTighehecouldnothavetoldyouwhywasconvincedthatthisyoungmanwasworthtalkingtoinregardtoallthis.Hewasnotreallyoldenoughtoknow,andyethedidknow.

           "Oh,thingsaregoingprettywellwithus,thankyou,Mr.Tighe,"Cowperwoodwouldanswer.

           "Itellyou,"hesaidtoCowperwoodonemorning,"thisslaveryagitation,ifitdoesn’tstop,isgoingtocausetrouble."
