Mondaycameandwithithisfinaldeparture.Allthatcouldbedonehadbeendone.Cowperwoodsaidhisfarewellstohismotherandfather,hisbrothersandsister.Hehadaratherdistantbutsensibleandmatter-of-facttalkwithhiswife.Hemadenospecialpointofsayinggood-bytohissonorhisdaughter;whenhecameinonThursday,Friday,Saturday,andSundayevenings,afterhehadlearnedthathewastodepartMonday,itwaswiththethoughtoftalkingtothemalittleinanespeciallyaffectionateway.Herealizedthathisgeneralmoralorunmoralattitudewasperhapsworkingthematemporaryinjustice.Stillhewasnotsure.Mostpeopledidfairlywellwiththeirlives,whethercoddledordeprivedofopportunity.Thesechildrenwouldprobablydoaswellasmostchildren,whateverhappened—andthen,anyhow,hehadnointentionofforsakingthemfinancially,ifhecouldhelpit.Hedidnotwanttoseparatehiswifefromherchildren,northemfromher.Sheshouldkeepthem.Hewantedthemtobecomfortablewithher.Hewouldliketoseethem,wherevertheywerewithher,occasionally.Onlyhewantedhisownpersonalfreedom,insofarassheandtheywereconcerned,togooffandsetupanewworldandanewhomewithAileen.Sonowontheselastdays,andparticularlythislastSundaynight,hewasrathernoticeablyconsiderateofhisboyandgirl,withoutbeingtooopenlyindicativeofhisapproachingseparationfromthem.
