           TheresidenceofHenryA.Mollenhauerwas,atthattime,inasectionofthecitywhichwasalmostasnewasthatinwhichButlerwasliving.ItwasonSouthBroadStreet,nearahandsomelibrarybuildingwhichhadbeenrecentlyerected.Itwasaspacioushouseofthetypeusuallyaffectedbymenofnewwealthinthosedaysastructurefourstoriesinheightofyellowbrickandwhitestonebuiltafternoschoolwhichonecouldreadilyidentify,butnotunattractiveinitsarchitecturalcomposition.Abroadflightofstepsleadingtoawideverandagaveintoadecidedlyornatedoor,whichwassetoneithersidebynarrowwindowsandornamentedtotherightandleftwithpale-bluejardinieresofconsiderablecharmofoutline.Theinterior,dividedintotwentyrooms,waspaneledandparquetedinthemostexpensivemannerforhomesofthatday.Therewasagreatreception-hall,alargeparlorordrawing-room,adining-roomatleastthirtyfeetsquarepaneledinoak;andonthesecondfloorwereamusic-roomdevotedtothetalentsofMollenhauer’sthreeambitiousdaughters,alibraryandprivateofficeforhimself,aboudoirandbathforhiswife,andaconservatory.

           Mollenhauerwas,andfelthimselftobe,averyimportantman.Hisfinancialandpoliticaljudgmentwasexceedinglykeen.AlthoughhewasaGerman,orratheranAmericanofGermanparentage,hewasamanofaratherimpressiveAmericanpresence.Hewastallandheavyandshrewdandcold.
