           TheverynextdaytherecalledatButler’sofficealong,preternaturallysolemnmanofnoticeableheightandangularity,dark-haired,dark-eyed,sallow,withafacethatwaslongandleathery,andparticularlyhawk-like,whotalkedwithButlerforoveranhourandthendeparted.ThateveninghecametotheButlerhousearounddinner-time,and,beingshownintoButler’sroom,wasgivenalookatAileenbyaruse.Butlersentforher,standinginthedoorwayjustfarenoughtoonesidetoyieldagoodviewofher.Thedetectivestoodbehindoneoftheheavycurtainswhichhadalreadybeenputupforthewinter,pretendingtolookoutintothestreet.

           "DidanyonedriveSissythismornin’?"askedButlerofAileen,inquiringafterafavoritefamilyhorse.Butler’splan,incasethedetectivewasseen,wastogivetheimpressionthathewasahorsemanwhohadcomeeithertobuyortosell.HisnamewasJonasAlderson,andbelookedsufficientlylikeahorsetradertobeone.

           "No,notifyouwanther.Jerrysuitsmejustaswell."
